potcraft.gif (4063 bytes)jackolantern.gif (3720 bytes)This week's Craft of the Week brings us a Halloween Clay Pot Center Piece. This craft is great for decorating your house, classroom, or party table. It can easily become a Fall decoration if you decide to make the wooden craft spoons into pumpkins, apples, or acorns just by using the appropriate colored acrylic paint.

For example, if you would rather make pumpkins instead of ghosts for your centerpiece, then by painting the wooden craft spoons orange and making pumpkin faces you have a fun pumpkin Halloween or fall centerpiece.

Halloween Pots are simple to make, kids from age 4 and up can have fun making these festive Halloween decorations.

What you need:

  • Tacky Glue
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Orange, acrylic paint
  • White, acrylic paint
  • Orange acrylic paint- optional
  • Yellow or orange ribbon- should be 26 inches long
  • Clay pot, 2 inches in diameter
  • Orange or crimped paper
  • Small piece of floral foam
  • Paintbrush
  • Black permanent magic marker
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • 3 wooden craft spoons
  • Paper plate to hold paints
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic or paper to cover work area
  • Water container
  • Q-tips or other like cotton swab

What you do:

  1. covercoverUsing the black paint paint your pot with one coat of paint. Let the pot completely.
  2. Using the end of your paintbrush or a Q-Tip make orange dots on your dry pot. Allow to dry.
  3. Using your white pain, paint the wooden craft spoons white. Let them completely dry.
  4. Using your black permanent magic marker draw faces on the spoons, these will be your ghosts. Outline the spoons with a broken dashed line once the white paint is completely dried. . You can make your ghosts have whatever personality you like, by drawing in their faces. They can look like your family members or friends too. If you do not want ghosts in the centerpiece you can easily paint the wooden craft spoons orange instead of white, with orange acrylic paint let them dry thoroughly and using the permanent black magic marker draw in pumpkin faces.
  5. Cut your ribbon into three 6-inch pieces and one 8-inch piece. Make a two-loop bow from each piece of ribbon. Glue the large bow to the front of the pot and glue small bows to neck of each ghost ( the white wooden craft spoons).
  6. Using your tacky glue, glue the floral foam inside your pot. Insert your ghosts or pumpkins into the foam and glue in place. You can use crimped paper or Spanish Moss to cover the floral foam. This gives your project a finished look.
